About

Established in the Middle East in 2012 the Sports Industry Awards series is the official celebration of the leaders, decision makers, organizations, facilities and campaigns that have contributed to the development of sport in the past 12months.

This incredible success story has, like all major sports, been built on teamwork, professionalism and business acumen. The vision and core strategies provided by the sport industry have ensured the region has stayed ahead of the game, constantly setting new standards that have become the envy of the international sporting arena.

In 2015 the awards expanded to include an Asian edition with Manila being awarded the inaugural host city, and Bangkok taking centre stage in 2016.

The 2017 edition of the SPIAs has 17 categories. These categories will recognize the lofty achievements of the sporting industry in the Middle East, rewarding those that have excelled across all the diverse sporting segments.

Each submission will go through a rigid and transparent judging process, overseen by a judging panel of 18 of the region’s experts, and facilitated by Deloitte and Touche, with the shortlisted finalists revealed at a press conference in early March. The winners will be announced in front of their peers during an evening of celebration at the black-tie Gala Dinner on the 11th of April at Fort Island, Madinat Jumeirah.

2017 Edition

SPIA 2017 shall officially open entries for submissions on the 5th of January 2017, with the final day for entries on the 2nd of March. The gala dinner will be held on Tuesday 11th of April at Fort Island, Madinat Jumeirah.

2016 Edition

SPIA 2016 was held on Wednesday 23rd March in the Dubai ballroom at the JW Marriott Marquis, Dubai with 563 in attendance.  38 awards in 14 categories were handed out on the night, find the full english post event coverage of the event here SPIA_2016, or alternatively arabic here, or view the video here. 2015 Edition

SPIA 2015 was  held on Wednesday 25th March in the ballroom at the JW Marriott Marquis, Dubai with an impressive 534 in attendance.  13 categories were awarded on the night, find a full list of winners and coverage of the event SPIA_2015, or view the video here. The 2015 edition of SPIAs was presented by Cadillac and supported by Emirates Airline, Dubai Sports City, First Gulf Bank, National Ambulance and Lacoste. 

2014 Edition

2013 Edition

Held on Wednesday 27th March at One & Only Royal Mirage’s Ampitheatre, Dubai the inaugural SPIA saw 415 of the Middle East’s sport industry attend the black tie gala event.  To find out more about the 2013 event download the post event report here SPIA_2013, or view the video here. A maximum of 10 shortlisted finalists shall be selected within each category.

Judging Process:

Round One

  • We pride ourselves on our transparent, independent, and unbiased judging process.
  • Email spia@sport360.com to request submission forms.
  • Completed submissions/nominations will be accepted via email, spia@sport360.com.
  • Once nominations close on the 2nd March, up to a maximum of 8 nominees from each category will be shortlisted by the dedicated panel of judges, or public votes.

Round Two

  • All shortlisted finalists will be announced to the press and uploaded to the dedicated SPIA Awards website www.sport360.com/spia
  • The SPIA Awards Judges will make the final decision on the category winners based on the highest scores within each category, the process for which will be overseen by Deloitte
  • The final winners will be decided by the judges’ scores
  • Winners will be announced at the Awards Gala Dinner on Tuesday 11th April.

Please note the two categories ‘Best Live Experience at a Professional Event’ & ‘Sports F&B Venue of the Year’ shall be completely decided by a public vote.

FAQs

Are the awards open for entry to companies/clubs/individuals outside of the UAE?

Yes, All entries within the Middle East and North Africa will be accepted.

How will I know if I am selected as a shortlist finalist?

You will be contacted.  The timeline for this is explained above.

Can I submit new information to my application once I have entered?

No, as judges may have already reviewed your application.

Can I enter more than one category?

Yes, as long as you meet the criteria for each category you are entering. You will need to complete a separate entry form, and submit a separate set of creative evidence for each category you enter.

What is the eligibility period for SPIA 2017 entries?

All campaigns and/or events must take place between January 1st 2016 and December 31st 2016.

Must the entry/entries be in English?

Yes

Do I have to be an entrant or finalist to attend the Awards gala evening?

Every and anyone is welcome!  In fact most attendees are going to see who will win, network with their industry peers and have a good time.

Who are the judges and how were they selected?

The judging panel for all categories is made up of industry expert’s chosen for their skills and experience within the Middle East Sports industry. They will not be revealed until the evening of the Awards. No members of the Sport 360 team are on the judging panel or part of the judging process.

How are the entries judged?

The judging process follows a rigorous process including mystery shopping, and video assessments. To ensure absolute transparency and integrity there will be an independent observer from Deloitte throughout the judging responsible for the handling and securing of all written materials relating to the results, for compiling the score reports and certifying to the accuracy of the scores within the report.

All judges sign a confidentiality agreement. i.e. Any information (including financial figures) disclosed to them during the judging process remains completely confidential.

Will I get feedback on my application?

Whilst individual written feedback is not possible, if the judging panel feels there are themes that can be highlighted to all entrants this will be communicated to them.

Can I change or withdraw my entry after it has been submitted?

No

I would like to submit an entry but the data corroborating its success is highly confidential. What can I do?

Security and confidentiality are of paramount importance to the SPIA Awards. All data and entry materials will be treated with the utmost confidentiality by the judges and management. All entries are stored in a secure place away from non-authorized personnel and shred after the Gala evening. Judges and those present throughout the judging are required to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement.

2017 Categories

  • 1. Best Sport Event Marketing Campaign of the Year (New for 2017)[See Description]
    This category is open to organizations and/or their marketing agencies that delivered effective event specific sports marketing campaigns. Judges will look for evidence of post event campaign success demonstrated through quantifiable reach and impact on target audience in terms of sponsor engagement, brand awareness, market share, increased registered entries and behavioral change measured against original objectives. Entries are welcome from organizations and or agencies that undertook a marketing campaign catered specifically for a sporting event.
  • 2. Sports Brand, Retail or Product Activation of the Year[See Description]
    This category is open to organizations and/or their marketing agencies that delivered effective Sports Brand, Retail or Product activations. For example: activations promoting product launches, new store openings, sports tourism, corporate hospitality, promotions/sales and sports events). Judges will look for evidence of post campaign success demonstrated through quantifiable reach and impact on target audience in terms of brand awareness, market share, increased sales and behavioral change measured against original objectives.
  • 3. Sport Youth Academy or Organization of the Year[See Description]
    This category is open to all Youth Sports organizations that delivered sport campaigns or events in terms of efficiency, planning, creativity and sporting value to youth in the region. Judges will look at the role the organization played in ensuring successful youth events/campaigns from development to implementation.
  • 4. Best Amateur Sport Event of the Year (MENA Only - Excluding U.A.E)[See Description]
    This category is open to community sporting events, which took place within the MENA region but outside the U.A.E, involving amateur participants. Judges will look for evidence of community engagement and achievement of pre-set objectives. For example: participants and spectator numbers, effective publicity and media coverage including social media, organization and logistics. Entries are welcome from sporting leagues, associations, academies, schools, other educational establishments and charities.
  • 5. Best Indoor Sport & Leisure Offering of the Year (New for 2017)[See Description]
    This category is open to all sporting facilities, which contain indoor platforms that offer sport & leisure. Entries may include gyms, spas, leisure clubs, & sports clubs. Judges will look for evidence of efficiently engaging with consumers, clearly showing value, differentiating their offering from competitors, and activities offered. All offerings must be within the MENA region.
  • 6. Event Supplier of the Year (New for 2017)[See Description]
    This category is open to all companies, which have supplied goods or services to a sporting event that has taken place within the MENA region. Judges will reward companies, which have played an integral part to the success of the event. Important factors include the relationship built with the event organizer, quality of goods, & efficiency of service. Various sporting event organizers within the MENA region shall select the nominees.
  • 7. Sports F&B Venue of the Year (New for 2017) (Public Voted)[See Description]
    This category is open to all food & beverage venues within the MENA region that show sporting events throughout the calendar year. A public vote will decide the categories winners. Important factors to consider for the public are quality of food, range of sporting events shown, accessibility to venue, and level of service.
  • 8. Best Sponsorship of a Sport or Sports Event[See Description]
    This category is open to sponsors that clearly demonstrate a positive business outcome such as enhanced brand awareness, wider client base, and consumer loyalty through sport sponsorship. Judges will look for evidence of pre-set success objectives measured through; pre-and post event brand awareness levels; positive attitudinal/behavioral changes among target audience eg increase subscriber or client base; success of pre and post event marketing and media outreach strategies measured through media coverage, social media usage; impact of corporate hospitality and community engagement. Entries are welcome from brands, organizations and or government entities that sponsored a professional or amateur event in the region.
  • 9. Best use of Social Media in Sport[See Description]
    This category is open to organizations and/or their marketing agencies that delivered effective integrated sports marketing campaigns through social media channels. For example: campaigns promoting product launches, sports events, and event participation). Judges will look for evidence of post campaign success demonstrated through quantifiable reach and impact on target audience in terms of brand awareness, engagement levels and behavioral change measured against original objectives. Entries are welcome from all.
  • 10. Best Live Experience at a Professional Sports Event (Public Voted)[See Description]
    This category is open to internationally accredited sporting events involving professional athletes that delivered a memorable experience for competitors and spectators locally, regionally and internationally while generating valuable exposure for the host city and wider region. A public vote will decide the categories winners. Important factors to consider for the public are audience engagement, effective pre-and post event marketing, and exemplary levels of organization and logistics.
  • 11. Best Sport Agency or Organization[See Description]
    This category is open to professional sport agency or organizations that delivered major sport campaigns or events in terms of efficiency, planning, creativity and sporting value to the region. Judges will look at the role the organization played in ensuring successful events from development to implementation. Entries are welcome from professional sport event organizers including in house event departments of corporate organizations.
  • 12. Best Amateur Sport Event of the Year (UAE Only)[See Description]
    This category is open to community sporting events involving amateur participants, which take place within the United Arab Emirates. Judges will look for evidence of community engagement and achievement of pre-set objectives. For example: participants and spectator numbers, effective publicity and media coverage including social media, organization and logistics. Entries are welcome from sporting leagues, associations, academies, schools, other educational establishments and charities.
  • 13. Best Sport & Recreation Facility[See Description]
    This category is open to venues that offer the very best in facilities, customer service, community engagement as well as contributing to the development of sport and a healthier lifestyle in the country or wider region. Judges will look for evidence of facilities in line with clientele expectation measured through effective marketing strategy, membership recruitment and retention as well as community engagement. Entries are welcome from all organizations that are licensed as a sports venue/facility in the region.
  • 14. Best Integrated Sport Marketing Campaign[See Description]
    This category is open to organizations and/or their marketing agencies that delivered effective integrated sports marketing campaigns. For example: campaigns promoting product launches, new store openings, sports tourism, corporate hospitality, promotions/sales and sports events). Judges will look for evidence of post campaign success demonstrated through quantifiable reach and impact on target audience in terms of brand awareness, market share, increased sales and behavioral change measured against original objectives. Entries are welcome from organizations and or agencies that undertook a sports marketing campaign.
  • 15. Best Youth Development Project[See Description]
    This category is open to an amateur or professional organization, which implemented a project that has demonstrated a tangible contribution to the development of grass roots youth (aged 3 to 18) participation in sport in the region. Judges will look for social inclusivity and community engagement from the region’s youth. Entries are welcome from companies, community associations, schools and/or independent sport academies and charities.
  • 16. Best Sports CSR Initiative[See Description]
    This category is open to brands, organizations and or communities whom use sport as a platform to promote corporate social responsibility. Judges will look for evidence of community engagement and achievement of pre-set objectives. For example: participants and spectator numbers, effective publicity and media coverage including social media, organization and logistics. Entries are welcome from corporate and non-for-profit organization, sporting leagues, associations, academies, schools, other educational establishments and charities.

Awards Evening

The prestigious black-tie Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony will take place on Tuesday 11th of April in the Fort Island, Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai.  The evening will start at 7pm with the cocktail reception, followed by a three course dinner and the Awards Ceremony, before moving into an after-party that will continue long into the night.
